Inspiration. Education. Celebration.
-KMS California Hosts First Ever International Training-
Hundreds of artists from more than eleven countries gathered in Santa Monica January16-19 for the first ever KMS California International Training.
For 4 days, the artists had a chance to learn exciting new finishing techniques, cutting skills, product knowledge, enhance presentation skills, make new friends, and express creativity. “Ultimately, the goal of the event was to strengthen and build the cohesiveness and excitement of the KMS California global artist community.” States Stephanie Sprankle, Head of Global Education. “This training was focused on inspiration, education and celebration,” she comments, “as we worked to create one global message and one global voice.”
The artists cheered for International Artistic Directors Edwin Johnston and Clive Allwright and members of KMS California’s Artistic Team, whose opening night program unveiled looks from the company’s latest campaign, Hotel California. They were also intrigued by Global Programs Manager Alan Earnshaw, who led them on a trip down memory lane, recalling the company’s beginnings and tracing its growth on its way to becoming a wildly popular, internationally recognized brand.
Trend insights came from Allwright and Global Brand Manager Michelle Rodriguez. Allwright reported a resurgence in texture and volume, and urged the audience to embrace their clients’ texture rather than try to tame it. He also noted that reflectivity and shine will be more crucial than ever when it comes to hair color and hinted at a surge in the popularity of red shades. Versatility will also be a watchword, noted Rodriguez, with clients requesting cuts that can be restyled in a number of ways.
In terms of products, Allwright noted, demand will increase for multi-taskers that streamline the styling process by offering several benefits, such as hold and treatment. To that end, the company will be launching three new products: hairstay Style Boost, a lightweight styling foundation for natural movement and bounce; addvolume Body Build Detangler, a body-enhancing leave-in conditioner and colorvitality Shine and Shield, an antioxidant-packed formula with UV filters that extends the life of color and delivers brilliant shine
The group also received an in depth look from Deanna Remirez Global Artistic Education Manager at the new Tech Guide that provides step-by-step training on the Hotel California looks; Long Hair Foundations, a guide that offers four step-by-steps updos from Edwin Johnston; and the new programs Versatile Styling and Product Foundations II.
During the course of the weekend, attendees got a look at the company’s newly upgraded website, from Rachael Erdmann, Assistant Global Brand Manager and Stephanie Sprankle. The site offers exciting new features and capabilities, new information about KMS California products and education that brings the brand to life 24/7. The new site will be updated with new techniques and information every quarter. The audience was given a sneak peak of the new webisode that will be released on the site in April. The webisode takes the stylist through a fun interactive learning on how to create dynamic customer service. Anh Tran, who is a member of the KMS artistic team plays a stylist who demonstrates what not to do and also what to do when interacting with a client. This humorous, yet educational piece is a must watch.
Everyone agreed that the event was an exciting way to kick off 2010. “I am very motivated to get home and share my new knowledge with my team!” says Stian Holter, Head of Education in Norway. Adds Marc Bohlender, Studio Leader, KPSS Austria, “I found it very interesting to share ideas with artists from around the world on how they conduct their programs and build the brand. I also applaud the new programs for 2010. I think Versatile Styling, Product Foundations II and Long Hair Foundations will be very effective.
